10 Great Charlotte Restaurants to Try This Summer

Summer is a great time of year to try a new restaurant. Outdoor patios are perfect for summer nights and lazy Sunday brunches can last well into the afternoon. We've rounded up some great options to visit with friends or for a date night. Enjoy the adventure!

5Church - Located on 5th and Church Streets in Uptown, 5Church is one of the more upscale restaurants in Charlotte where you can enjoy amazing food for date night or late night. The Charlotte location is the original 5Church and it does not disappoint. 5Church is consistently delicious and Jamie Lynch received an invitation to participate in Bravo’s Top Chef for good reason.

Good Food on Montford - Located off Park Road just south of Myers Park, Good Food on Montford serves up the best Tapas style small plates in Charlotte. Be prepared for a bit of a wait, which will give you the perfect opportunity to enjoy a few specialty cocktails at the bar or on the patio before your dinner.

Basil Thai - If you like Thai, Basil is a great option. It’s located across 5th Street from 5Church, so the location is equally convenient to Uptown. Basil Thai is highly rated and for good reason. Basil offers contemporary dining and traditional Thai dishes. Choose your favorite and know that it will be delicious.

The King’s Kitchen - The King’s Kitchen is part of the Noble Restaurant Group, which also owns Rooster’s. The menu at The King’s Kitchen is filled with Southern staples like pimento cheese and collard greens. Beyond serving up good Southern dishes, The King’s Kitchen is probably just as famous for their mission as the food. They work to help homeless Charlotteans get back on their feet with job training and other programs.

Halcyon - Halcyon’s description of ‘Refined Farm-to-Table Dining’ is exactly on point. Their menu offers local, seasonal foods that are fresh and fantastic. The location in The Mint Museum is convenient to other Uptown venues and Mint Members even receive a discount.

300 East - 300 East is located in an old Victorian house on East Boulevard in Dilworth. The menu offers great traditional southern dishes that do not disappoint, but dessert is where 300 East truly shines. Their desserts are beautiful and delicious and there is something on the dessert menu for everyone.

Beef & Bottle - Beef & Bottle is arguably the best steakhouse in Charlotte. Located off South Blvd and Woodlawn Rd (exit 6 off I-77), Beef & Bottle is a short drive from Uptown and South Charlotte. They do have plenty of other options on the menu, but order a steak. You won’t be disappointed.

Price’s Chicken Coop - Price’s Chicken Coop is a contender for the best fried chicken in the country. Seriously. Price’s is cash only and the lines get quite long, but they move very quickly because no cell phones are allowed. You can choose between dark or white fried chicken and a few other fried goodies to go with your hushpuppies. If you want something other than sweet tea, there is a soda machine in the corner. Take the whole lot over to Freedom Park for a picnic, because there are no tables at Price’s Chicken Coop.

Heirloom - Heirloom is located near Mountain Island Lake and is another great Farm-to-Fork option. The best option is to order the 6-Course Chef’s Tasting Menu and split it with your date. This allows you to try several locally sourced seasonal dishes and leave room for dessert. Heirloom even offers a Pay What you Can option that delivers a healthy meal to help out the local community in a way that truly makes a difference every day.

The Cajun Queen - Located on 7th Street in the heart of Elizabeth, The Cajun Queen offers authentic New Orleans, cajun style food. The étouffée and gumbo will transport you straight to Bourbon Street and the Shrimp and Grits are fantastic if you just want southern fare. The Cajun Queen gets bonus points for their brunch. It’s tough to choose a favorite dish from the brunch menu, so go with friends who like to share.

Bonus Entrants:

Nelly’s Southern Kitchen - Located outside Charlotte in the sweet front porch town of Belmont, Nelly’s Southern Kitchen is a true gem. They offer traditional southern fare with live music and a fun, comfortable atmosphere. Nelly's might be the best place on our list for a group of good friends.

Kebab-Je - If you’ve never had Shawarma, you’re missing out and you should head down to Kebab-Je tonight for dinner. This small Matthews restaurant is big on authentic flavor. Everything on the menu is truly fantastic and it’s an international food lover’s dream.

Kindred - Kindred is located in downtown Davidson, across from the college. The Main Street location cannot be beat, and neither can the food. Kindred opened to rave reviews and has been a tough reservation since. We highly recommend the milk bread.

Cast Iron Waffles - Cast Iron Waffles in Ballantyne is a delightful treat. They serve up traditional Liege style waffles topped with seasonal, flavorful fruits and sweets. Perfect for breakfast or an afternoon treat, check them out for coffee and waffles.

Midwood Smokehouse - Originally located in Plaza Midwood, Midwood Smokehouse has several locations around Charlotte now and the food is amazing at all of them. Barbecue is a must-have in Charlotte and Midwood is the place to get it. Order the Combo Platter so you can taste everything and share it with your friends.
