Autumn is the perfect time to get rid of clutter around your home, especially if you plan to list your home for sale in the spring. As the weather gets cooler, you’ll be spending more time indoors and surrounded by the things in your home. If your home is clean and clutter-free, it will be a great place to spend extra time. If you start de-cluttering in the fall, you’ll also have plenty of time to clear out the items that no longer serve you in your home and make way for staging items or repairs that need to be made before you sell your home.
When you prepare to clean out your home, start with the easiest items to eliminate. This will help you build momentum as you move through the rest of your house and help you feel confident once you get to the items that might require a tough choice. Start with the rarely-used items at the top of your closets and cabinets.
Create piles or separate storage bins for four different sets of items:
Keep - This should be the biggest pile.
Sell - Anything that you no longer use, but has value on Craigslist, FB sale groups, etc. This pile has an expiration! If you cannot sell something within 6 weeks, it goes to the Give pile.
Give - Anything that you no longer use, but still has life left in it. Give to friends or to charity.
Trash - Broken items beyond repair. Inexpensive items that would not be bought at a thrift shop.
If you haven’t used something in five years, it’s probably safe to sell, donate, or throw it in the trash, especially if it’s broken or out-dated. Give your donations to a shelter or another good cause where they will have a second life. Keep an editing eye around your home and remember that movers charge by the pound. You don’t want to pay to move an item that doesn’t belong in your home in the first place.
Aim to get rid of 2-3 bags of clutter per week for 6-8 weeks. If you start today, you’ll make plenty of space in your home for your holiday decorations!
Enjoy the Adventure!
