Moving a Young Family

Moving a family is a unique home buying experience. Parents often want to “move up” out of their starter home and into a bigger home in a family-friendly neighborhood or town with great elementary schools. Other times, a great job opportunity comes along in a new city that might even require a long-distance move away from friends and family that offer easy access to babysitting. Here in Charlotte, we have new people moving to town every day to take advantage of everything the city offers to young families.

Whether you are moving across town or across the country, there are plenty of things that you can do to make the move easier on your kids and your family as a whole.

Include your kids in the process. Bring your entire family to look at houses. Whether it’s a local or a long-distance move, your kids will want to check out the new neighborhood. Once you’ve narrowed your choices down to a single neighborhood, take your kids to the park or playground to check it out. Once your offer is accepted on a house, bring your kids back and let them help pick out their room.

If your kids are old enough, let them help you pack. It might seem counterintuitive and sometimes even counterproductive, but when your kids are part of the packing process, they feel empowered to decide what gets packed up first and make little decisions, like which items go into the “Open First” box.

Create a ‘Go’ bag for your children with a few of their favorite things to bring to the new house. Let them help you choose what goes in the bag so they can be sure to have a favorite stuffed animal or bedtime stories that will make them feel at home on their first nights in the new house.

Pack their current room last, unpack their new room first. Set up your kids’ bedrooms first in your new house. Let him help you choose the paint color for his own space or let her choose her new bed that you promised during the move. Give your kids power to make decisions that you feel comfortable allowing them to make throughout the move.

Good luck! Moving your kids to get into the right schools or take advantage of a great opportunity is so worthwhile. A great real estate agent can help you make the process as simple as possible.

Enjoy the Adventure!
