Weekend Trips from Charlotte: The Mountains of NC

Real Estate

The mountains are a great place to get away from the summer heat in Charlotte. It’s usually about 5-10 degrees cooler in the mountains, depending on the elevation. The mountains are also a good place to see the leaves change color in the fall. If that’s something you are excited to see and/or photograph, the Blue Ridge Parkway has breathtaking overlooks. The mountains are close enough for a day trip at about two hours to Asheville (West of Charlotte), Blowing Rock, or Boone (Both NNW of Charlotte).

There’s plenty to do up in the mountains at virtually any price point, from free leaf-peeping along the Blue Ridge Parkway to a $495 spa day at The Inn at Biltmore Estate and everything in between. The Biltmore Estate is definitely worth a visit, at least once. Biltmore House gets quite crowded on the weekends, so plan accordingly. On the Estate, the gardens are beautiful and the roses smell amazing. Biltmore Winery is also popular and the tasting is included in your ticket price. If you spend the weekend in Asheville, you can do Biltmore in a day and spend your other day outside enjoying the weather and the scenery.

Boone and Blowing Rock are nearby one another and close enough to spend a day in each place if you go for a weekend. If you have little ones, Tweetsie Railroad is about halfway between the two and popular with kids.

If you just want to go up to the mountains to enjoy the scenery, there are some great options for that, as well. If your family likes spending time on the water, you can take your kids tubing along the French Broad River near Asheville, or go a bit further to Bryson City for river rafting on the Tuckasegee River. If you enjoy walking and hiking, the view from the Blowing Rock is well worth the climb. If you prefer shopping and dining, both Asheville and Blowing Rock offer a good selection of both. Check out Sierra Nevada in Asheville or Blowing Rock Brewing in Blowing Rock. You really can’t go wrong buying a home in the Charlotte area because of its proximity to the mountains.

Enjoy the adventure!
